in SMAN 6 Palangka Raya

Abstract
This research is about questions
imposed by the teachers in teaching speaking skill in SMAN 6 Palangka Raya.
Questionning is important aspect in maintaining classroom interaction. The
purpose of this study is to find out what type of questions are mostly teachers
of English in engaging the students during teaching speaking skill. Another is
to find out which types of questions are mostly effective in engaging the
students.
The research was conducted using
qualitative method. Two of English teachers of SMAN 6 Palangka Raya were the
subject of the study. The data were the questions forms which were orally
imposed by the teachers of English during teaching speaking skill. Another data
were from the relevant answers from the students towards the teachers’
questions. All of these data were transcribed. The length of utterances in
words of relevant responses were counted to determined the effectiveness of the
questions.
The analysis showed that the
teachers of English used 106 open questions and 104 closed questions during
teaching speaking skill. The most effective question to engage the students
during teaching speaking skill is open question. The counting length of utterance in words of relevant
responses from the students towards the questions were in range from 6 – 28
words.
