Abstract

The fifth grade students of SDN 11 Palangka, Palangka Raya, had problem that was the lack of English vocabulary.  Therefore, this study was conducted mainly to improve the students’ mastery in English vocabulary and motivation in learning English.  Moreover, this study wanted to describe the students’ improvements after implementing “Simply Tell Me” (Singing, Playing, and Telling story).

This study adopted Classroom Action Research design by Kurt Lewin (1990).  The data needed in this study was collected through vocabulary test (pre-test and post-test), observation, questionnaire, and interview.  Since this study was qualitative-descriptive, the qualitative data were converted into simple quantitative data (mean score and percentage), then interpreted by certain qualification.

This study had four criteria of success.  First, the students’ average score of vocabulary was ≥ 70.  Second, 75 % of the students gained score ≥ 70.  Third, the average score of students’ observation was ≥ 2.50 and fourth, the average score of teacher observation was ≥ 2.50.  The result in cycle 1 showed the students’ average score of vocabulary was 69.54 and only 58.82 % of the students gained the score ≥ 70.  It failed to meet the first and the second criteria of success.  The score had improved in cycle 2.  The students’ average score was 78.30 and 88.24 % of the students gained the score ≥ 70.  They were successful on the first and the second criteria of success.  In addition, the observation scores for students and teacher in both cycle 1 and 2 were successful to meet the third and the fourth criteria of success.  The observation score for students and teacher in cycle 1 were 3.49 and 3.71.  These scores had improved in cycle 2.  The observation score for students and teacher in this cycle were 3.66 and 3.90.

Therefore, based on the result of the study, the implementation of “Simply Tell Me” can improve students’ vocabularies in English.  In addition, all of the students (100%) agreed that after having “Simply Tell Me” they were more motivated in learning English in the class (questionnaire result).“Simply Tell Me” also can improve students’ motivation in learning English.  Moreover, “Simply Tell Me” had improved students’ mastery in English vocabulary.  The students’ average vocabulary score improved from 69.54 (in cycle 1) became 78.30 (in cycle 2).  Moreover, the percentage of students gained score ≥ 70 also improved from 58.82% to 88.24 %.
