Effects of Information Type and Topic Preference on Reading Comprehension of Explanation Text Gained by the Eleventh Grade IPS Students of SMA Negeri 1 Bulik in Academic Year 2012/2013

Abstract


This study was conducted to find out the effects of information type on reading comprehension of explanation text gained by the eleventh grade IPS students of SMA Negeri 1 Bulik in academic year 2012/2013. Besides, this study was also conducted to find out the effects of topic preference on reading comprehension and to find out the interaction effects of information type and topic preference on reading comprehension of explanation text gained by the eleventh grade IPS students of SMA Negeri 1 Bulik.
The population of this study was the eleventh grade of IPS students of SMA Negeri 1 Bulik in academic year 2012/2013. Reading test was used as the instrument in order to collect the data needed. There were two kinds of the text in this study: Explanation Text with Thesis Statement and Explanation Text with Main Idea. 
The research method that used in this study was experimental method. The data were processed and analyzed according to the following steps: giving the treatment, checking and scoring, tabulating, analyzing the data by using Mann Whitney Rank Sum Test and Kruskal Wallis Rank Sum Test processed by SPSS version 15, and taking conclusion based on statistical result.
The result of this study showed that there was no significant effect of thesis statement on reading comprehension. There was significant effect of topic preference on reading comprehension. The interaction effect of information type and topic preference on reading comprehension of  explanation text gained by the eleventh grade IPS students of SMA Negeri 1 Bulik in academic year 2012/2013 could not be proved whether there was significant or not. Since, the data were tested by using nonparametric Mann Whitney Rank Sum Test and Kruskall Wallis Rank Sum Test.
